“If you’re looking for a baby nurse, I give my full recommendation for Shelly Ottley. She’s been recommended in these Facebook groups a few times, and with good reason. With over 20 years of experience, SHE. KNOWS. HER. STUFF! We were searching for someone who could not only help care for our newborn son, but serve as a parenting coach of sorts for my husband and me, as we are first time parents.
She did those things and more. While I was pregnant, she consistently checked in to make sure that I was feeling well during my pregnancy, offering advice. The day we brought our son home from the hospital, she met us at our apartment and immediately whipped it into baby-friendly shape. She audited all of our baby items and gave expert recommendations on things we needed, things we should return, and things worth/not worth investing in. She combined her two decades worth of experience with research on the latest trends to guide her recommendations. Even though she’s been doing this for a while, she’s not stuck in her ways and was very enthusiastic when I introduced certain baby tracking apps into our daily routine.
She genuinely loves babies. This is not just a job or even a career to her - it’s a calling. My son lights up when he sees her. I can often hear her joking with him and talking to him from the other room, and I hear genuine joy and enthusiasm from her. While she is hilarious, fun and lively, she has a calming effect on babies, and quickly soothes him when he’s not feeling his best.
While baby nurses add value by helping to care for your baby and enabling you much-needed sleep, you’re also getting a new, temporary roommate. This can be a challenge, but Shelly is the BEST roommate. While it is not a part of her official job responsibilities, she cooks me breakfast every morning (with wholesome, nutritious ingredients that helped bring my breastmilk in during the early days of motherhood), and sometimes cooks whole meals for us. She and I went on Whole 30 together, so if you’re looking to get back into shape and stay on a healthy eating regimen post-baby, she will happily help with that! She also doesn’t just tidy up our baby’s room and play areas..she cleans the apartment and leaves it spotless! When I tell her it’s not necessary, as it’s not a part of her job responsibilities, she smiles, shrugs, and says, “I can’t sit still!”
She’s become a part of our little family, and will definitely be a presence in our lives in the future. She keeps in touch with all of her clients, and has created an unofficial network of infant hand-me-downs for her clients from previous clients.
I always tell her that if we decide to have a second child, my husband will be the first person to know, and she will be the second, so she can come work with us again. Shelly Ottley is the best baby nurse I could haver ever asked for! Even before I gave birth, she was always checking in on how I was feeling and sending me recommendations on things I should have before the baby came. When we came home from the hospital, Shelly immediately took over, organized our nursery, and got everything set up for us. She is so knowledgable, and taught us so much in the time she was with us. She is also so pleasant and fun to be around, and you can just tell she really loves her job and genuinely cares for our daughter.
Not only did she take great care of our baby, she cooked meals for us and cleaned our apartment! This was not expected but super helpful especially while recovering from a c-section. Shelly left us about 3 weeks ago, however she still keeps in touch with me, asking for updates on how my daughter is sleeping and eating and continuing to give great advice and recommendations. She will stop in to say hi whenever she’s in the neighborhood, and truly feels like part of our family.
